Dalmatians - About The Breed
Dalmatians are a sleek, unique looking breed that is sure to be recognized anywhere they go. They are highly intelligent and eager to please, making them relatively easy to train - if you are consistent. Dalmatians were bred to work and run, which required them to have a strong mind and may cause them to also be stubborn if they are not challenged (ie training, a job, physical/mental stimulation).
Born to run, Dalmatians are a high energy breed. They require some serious mental and physical stimulation to keep them from becoming bored and mischievous. It is recommended that they get at least 1-2 hours of exercise every day. Dals make excellent jogging partners, but most will be happy with a few long walks each day and some playtime. Having a fenced in yard is ideal, but they will also do okay in an apartment or townhome if exercised properly.
With their loyal, loving, and alert personality, they can make great companions and even watch dogs for both individuals and families when they are socialized properly. They are happiest when they are with their people.
FAQs
What is a Long Coat Dalmatian?
A long coat (LC) Dalmatian is just that - a purebred, long haired Dalmatian! Unlike the short coat with coarse hairs, their coat is soft and silky. The gene responsible for the long coat is a recessive, naturally occurring trait in the breed.
Do Long Coat Dalmatians Shed More Than Short Coat?
Both long and short coat Dalmatians shed, but the longer hairs are actually easier to clean up compared to the short, stiff hairs that can stick in everything.
How Big Do They Get?
Height: 19-24in
Weight: 45-70lbs
In general, males tend to be larger than the females.
LUA vs HUA
Dalmatians can either be LUA (low uric acid) or HUA (high uric acid). Dals that are HUA are prone to forming kidney and bladder stones in their urinary tract, while LUA Dals are not. HUA Dals require a diet low in purines and with this can live normal, happy lives.
Deafness in Dalmatians?
Deafness is another common health concern in Dals. This is a congenital defect that sometimes occurs. Some Dalmatians also have unilateral hearing which means they can only hear out of one ear.
Ethical breeders will have their puppies tested by a licensed veterinarian. This is called a BAER (brainstem auditory evoked response) test and it is used to measure the puppy’s hearing response in each ear.
